environmental remediation: the process of identifying and removing pollution or contaminants from a piece of property. The process usually begins with a site assessment. Once the assessment is complete and the contaminants are identified, a strategy for removal is put together and implemented. Environment remediation is often required under law before a site that is thought to be contaminated is redeveloped or rezoned (i.e. a brownfield). The costs to conduct environmental remediation are often paid for by the current property owner, but are sometimes subsidized by the government in cases involving abandoned sites through a superfund from taxing polluting industries.
