Renovation of a gymnasium built in 1953 – which included replacing the roof while students attended classes nearby – was the centerpiece of this project led by Ashland-based Adroit Construction Company.

The project also involved the construction of a new precast concrete building that houses a music room, soundproof practice rooms, an auxiliary gym and locker rooms. While work began in summer 2008, the fall brought a whole new dynamic to the effort, said Bob Mayers, Adroit Construction’s chief executive officer.

“Football season was in full swing in the fall and we had a lot of people going right by the job site, so maintaining safety was a particular concern on that project,” he said. “And whenever you have students around the site going to school all day long, there’s a lot of curiosity.”

Mayers said the project was rewarding professionally because of its value to the community. It also was a personal accomplishment for him and his family.

“I’m a longtime Ashland resident and I’ve had three children go to that school,” he said. “My son was actually the project engineer, so it was fun to see him on site and being a part of the project.”
