This consolidation of two existing high schools onto one campus involved 290,000 square feet of both new and remodel construction that included a new two-story classroom wing, gymnasium, auditorium, media center, commons, administration center, athletic fields, parking lot expansion, tennis courts, and a career and technology building.

The project’s showpiece is a 700-seat theater that houses a fully stocked fly loft, catwalks system, control and lighting rooms, scene shop, and 10-foot-deep orchestra pit.

Money saved during construction allowed for several additional features. These included a new 30,000-square-foot agricultural science building with welding, wood and auto shops, two spray-finishing rooms, additional science and technology classrooms, and a two-bay greenhouse. Philip Johnson, project engineer for Salem-based LCG Pence Construction, said challenges included working with students on campus to manage noise, minimizing dust and traffic, and dealing with staging constraints.

The project came in on time and under budget because of collaboration between the project team, Silver Falls School District and a bond advisory committee that was involved from the earliest stages, he noted.

“From a personal standpoint, one of the great things about it is that it’s a small community,” Johnson said, “and the community was very involved and excited about the project.”
