Road crews have reopened some lanes of traffic this afternoon after a landslide occurred along U.S. 101 near North Bend Sunday afternoon.

Crews from the Oregon Department of Transportation as well as Knife River Construction were called to the site after 700 yards of debris fell from a nearby hillside, covering the road with logs and mud. The landslide also shut down power at 800 nearby homes. Power has since been restored, and one lane in both northbound and southbound lanes has been cleared and reopened.

According to Gary Leaming, spokesman for ODOT, no official cause has been determined for the landslide, but a recent fire at the Old Roosevelt School in North Bend could be to blame. Fire crews on Sunday morning doused the flaming building, which sits on a cliff overlooking the highway, with hundreds of gallons of water.

“There is strong evidence that points to water from that fire,” Leaming said. “We’re working with the city and the fire department to get to the bottom of it.”
