Salem Hospital looks to purchase former school

Salem Hospital is looking to purchase the former building of the Oregon School for the Blind.

The hospital has entered into a purchase agreement with the state, which closed the school last year because of low enrollment.

The 8.37-acre site at 700 Church St. in Salem will sell for $6 million, pending a 60-day public comment period and a site assessment. The proceeds from the sale would be split equally between a fund for the visually impaired and the School for the Deaf, as ordered in a bill signed by Gov. Ted Kulongoski in March.

The hospital proposes turning the east portion of the site into a parking lot and developing the rest of the site in the future, said hospital spokeswoman Julie Howard. The hospital plans to use a portion of the site as a connection for the Salem Greenway, a pedestrian and cycling path that connects five city parks, she said.

The deal could be finalized as early as October.
