Caffe Viale opens its new location today in a converted 1970s TriMet bus shelter.

TriMet had the 42 bus shelters along Southwest Fifth and Sixth avenues torn down as part of the MAX Green Line light-rail project, but the transit agency decided to preserve one. The other shelters were rebuilt, and the preserved structure was donated to Viale owner Nicole McClelland, who converted the space into a caf茅.

The caf茅, located on Southwest Fifth Avenue between Salmon and Main streets, is less than 100 square feet and offers walk-up service only.

“We thought it was a great way to remember the history of the original transit mall,” said Mary Fetsch, spokeswoman for TriMet. “We like the added activity on the sidewalk; it makes the area more vibrant and adds more security to the area with more eyes and ears.”

Howard S. Wright Constructors was the general contractor on the project. Hennebery Eddy Architects was the designer.
