Metro gets $2M for Barbur Boulevard study

Portland’s regional government Metro has received a $2 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration for a transportation study.

The grant will be used for a transit corridor study along Barbur Boulevard in Southwest Portland, according to Karen Kane, spokeswoman for Metro. Identified as one of the region’s next major transit corridors, the study will explore the best way to implement bus-rapid transit, streetcar, light rail or other transportation to reduce the number of cars on Barbur Boulevard.

The 17-mile-long corridor runs along Interstate 5 and State Roud 99-W between downtown Portland and Sherwood, Kane said.聽 Potential improvements for non-vehicle trips, such as improved sidewalks and bike paths, will also be explored during the study.

The FTA awarded a total of $25.7 million in grants in 16 states for studies to evaluate the best way to place new or expanded transit systems in communities.
