The lower deck of the Steel Bridge has reopened to bike and pedestrian traffic after a brief shutdown Wednesday caused by a faulty bolt that needed adjusting, according to the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

The inner gate on the east end of the bridge had a mechanical problem that could have been hazardous to pedestrian and bike traffic on the bridge during a span lift, so shut down access to the lower bridge span from 10:30 a.m. to about 2 p.m., said Cheryl Kuck, a spokeswoman.

The problem is not related to issues with a faulty motor that caused temporary shutdowns of the lower deck of the bridge last July and August, she added.

“Last year and the year before we had problems with the motors, and this was not a problem with that,” Kuck said. “The motor problems last year had to do with age. It was the first time any of them had needed replacing since 2003.”

Those problems have also been repaired, Kuck said.
