Portland-area transit agency TriMet is installing speakers on ten of its buses that will announce warnings to pedestrians as the buses turn. The speakers, what TriMet calls a Pedestrian Warning System, will announce “Pedestrians, the bus is turning” every time the steering wheel turns.
The change comes after a bus driver hit five people, killing two, during a turn last year.
While we appreciate the innovative thought and attention to pedestrian safety, some of us at the 91ÊÓƵ wonder if the sound system is practical. We also thought of other things that could be announced through the speakers. Here are our top 10:
10. Pedestrians, the bus is moving forward.
9. On your left!
8. Put a bird on it.
7. Bus is three minutes away! (loudly, of course)
6. (To late riders) Bus is leaving the stop in 3, 2 …
5. I make more money than you.
4. Caution, Kindle on board
3. (At a four-way stop) No, I insist, you go.
2. Honk!
1. Go by streetcar!
