Sharon A. Jones has served as a tenured faculty member at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and as the director of the engineering division at Lafayette College.
In July, she’ll settle into a new role in a new city as dean of the Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering at the University of Portland. She will replace Zia Yamayee, who has been the school’s dean for the past 15 years.
In addition to a resume that includes master’s degrees in civil engineering and public administration and a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University, Jones has a strong track record in receiving external grants for research, according to UP administrators. She has two active grants she plans on finishing once she arrives in Portland.
U.S. News and World Report ranks UP’s engineering school as the 38th best in the country. Graduates of the Portland school boast a 97 percent pass rate for the national Fundamentals of Engineering exam, compared with a national pass rate of 77 percent.Â
