The Oregon Garden’s “A-Mazing Water Garden” wetland system is competing to win a $10,000 grant via Rain Bird Corp.’s Intelligent Use of Water Awards, an interactive program that will give money to three stand-out water conservation and sustainability projects.

The program, a global initiative, is relying on public votes to determine winners in multiple categories. The Oregon Garden is seeking its wetland system to jump from 11th place into the top three by Tuesday.

Combining wildlife habitat and treated wastewater recycling from the nearby town of Silverton with the creation of a botanical haven, the Oregon Garden’s “A-Mazing Water Garden” is an example of how public gardens can serve multiple purposes. The one-acre expanse is home to aquatic plants, tropical flowers and carnivorous plants as well as hundreds of animals, including mallards, koi and heron.
