Grist picked up today on the supposed “greenest grocery store in the world,” which is disappointingly not located in Portland, but in Dedham, Mass.

The Whole Foods location in Dedham is a “showcase facility” for the company’s best practices, including a 100 percent recycled steel frame, skylights to reduce the need for artificial lighting and solar panels that provide 90 percent of the store’s power.

What’s up, Portland? We’re building the largest living building and the city’s just crawling with LEED certifications… but nobody thought to make a net-zero New Seasons?

Actually, the first LEED-certified grocery store in Oregon was ‘s Hawthorne district location, which completed its green remodel last year. When wrote about that project, a Kroger spokesman said that the company wouldn’t try to go LEED in Oregon again, but it would in Washington. And New Seasons said it’d stick to its own sustainability standards, like recycling the building it demolished to build its Hawthorne district market.
