The Neues Museum in Berlin has been awarded the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, otherwise known as the Mies van der Rohe Award. The award recognizes architectural accomplishments in Europe in works completed in the two years between each award.

The Neues Museum was heavily damaged during World War II and began a reconstruction in 2003.

The architect, David Chipperfield, a knighted British architect with a modernist aesthetic, won the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects this year. He’s worked extensively in the U.S., where he designed the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, and the Central Public Library in Des Moines, Iowa. He is currently working on the expansion of the Anchorage Museum in Alaska.

The jury for the Mies van der Rohe Award said the Neues Museum is good example of mixing old with new.

“The rebuilding of the Neues Museum is an extraordinary achievement. Rarely have an architect and client succeeded in undertaking a work of such historic importance and complexity; especially one that involves both preservation and new building. The project raises and addresses many aesthetic, ethical, and technical issues. It is an exemplary demonstration of what collaboration can achieve in the context of contemporary European architectural practice,” said Jury Chair Mohsen Mostafavi.
