A new urban housing concept aimed at the sustainability crowd is coming to Portland: micro homes.

The Portland offices of , a nationwide mega home builder, will break ground Friday on 29 new micro homes, ranging in size from 367 to 687 square feet, in Southeast Portland. The homes will be constructed on a 15,000-square-foot lot located at the intersection of Southeast Division Street and 43^rd Avenue.

The neighborhood, dubbed Division 43, is considered a pilot project for the company, which is beginning to look toward building homes on urban infill sites, according to a release on the groundbreaking.

The homes are being constructed with sustainable building products like reclaimed wood for the flooring and interior color packages made from recycled materials. The homes will also have energy-efficient mechanics like low-flow toilets and Energy Star-rated products.

With dining and shopping options close by, and a Zipcar center in walking distance, D.R. Horton is pitching the home to commuters looking for sustainable living.

The groundbreaking is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday. In addition to the ceremony, the company will also unveil its plans and concepts for the project.
