Portland city staffers will ask the city council on Wednesday to approve $11.25 million to be spent on a 146-acre parcel in Southwest Portland.

The city plans on purchasing the parcel, which is between Southwest Macadam Avenue and Southwest Palatine Hill Road near River View Cemetery, in order to preserve the land for wildlife and some recreation uses. The city would purchase the land from The Trust for Public Land, which holds the option to purchase the land, at a cost $2.75 million below the fair market value, according to a statement from the city.

The purchase will be funded through several sources. In addition to $2.5 million coming from Portland’s local share of the 2006 Metro Natural Areas Bond Measure, $6 million will come from the Bureau of Environmental Services’ Grey to Green Initiative, $2 million from Metro and $750,000 from an Oregon State Park grant.

The Bureau of Parks & Recreation would manage and operate the land at a cost of $623,000 over the first five years.
