New group will fund research for Oregon Sustainability Center

A new research consortium will combine investments from local businesses and organizations to fund research on sustainable building, starting with two projects focused on the .

The Oregon Built Environment and Sustainable Technologies center announced the new consortium this week. Members include the Oregon University System, Intel, CertainTeed/Saint-Gobain, Skanska, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, the Portland Sustainability Institute, Portland Development Commission, Earth Advantage Institute, Cascadia Green Building Council/International Living Building Institute, ZGF Architects, and Green Building Services.

鈥淲e created the Consortium in response to a growing need for a mechanism to drive collaborations between industry and universities,鈥 said program manager Johanna Brickman in a statement. 鈥淭his allows companies to pool their investments to proactively drive research according to their shared needs and priorities, rather than in reaction to the needs of existing projects.鈥

will issue an open call to members for projects in the future. Currently, the consortium is set to fund research at Oregon State University on water usage in the Oregon Sustainability Center. The consortium will also fund Portland State University research into the use of sustainable cement-based products in the center’s construction.
