Whelton Architecture was selected this week to design the city’s newest fire station. The city of Portland issued an intent to award a nearly $700,000 contract to Whelton after conducting interviews with shortlisted candidates Monday. Ten firms responded to a request for qualifications for the project.

Fire Station 21 will replace an existing building on a prominent waterfront site near the Hawthorne Bridge and will be the Portland Fire and Rescue water rescue hub. The project will include the addition of a 10,000-square-foot boathouse. Whelton had previously been selected to design the nearby Firefighters Memorial after winning a contest last year.

鈥淚t’s really an amazing site and an amazing opportunity to craft something for the city,鈥� said Aaron Whelton of Whelton Architecture. 鈥淚t’s unique in its context. I don’t think there are any other buildings nearly as prominent along the east bank.鈥�

The design team will include structural engineers KPFF Consulting Engineers, mechanical electrical and plumbing engineers Interface Engineering, and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design consultants Green Building Services. Seattle-based TCA Architects will co-design the project, having years of experience designing fire stations, Whelton said.
