Housed on Hewlett-Packard鈥檚 Corvallis campus, the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnoogies Institute at Oregon State University features 14 new research labs for the development of cutting-edge technology.

The lab has a large number of users with diverse needs, so the building features a modular and extremely flexible lab layout. 鈥淎ll of the shelving fits under the tables, so basically you can reorganize the lab to be any way you want,鈥� said Tucker Bowman, project engineer for Andersen Construction.

The work included a 14,500-square-foot development laboratory, 10,000 square feet of laboratory technology spaces and a new 6,700-square-foot classroom, and other new lab spaces.

During construction, the project team realized that excessive concrete moisture in the 18-year-old building鈥檚 original concrete slabs might cause warranty problems with rubber flooring聽 in the laboratories. IDC Architects, Andersen Construction and OSU collaborated to solve the problem by applying a surface vapor barrier that sealed all moisture issues.

Despite these challenges, the project was completed under budget and on schedule.
