The Riverdale K-8 School in southwest Portland replaces a smaller 1920s-era building designed by A.E. Doyle, who is credited with some of Portland鈥檚 most iconic buildings. Bremik Construction directed construction of the two-story, 43,400-square-foot project.

Brent Parry, president of Bremik and principal-in-charge at Riverdale, said that the team took care to preserve some of the school鈥檚 historic flavor. The new design, for example, incorporates the cupola from the old building.

The LEED-gold school strays from its predecessor, though, in favor of a site design that reduces the building鈥檚 impact on the environment. Cardno WRG and GreenWorks, for example, incorporated water quality planters and stormwater facilities that improve local hydrology and serve as teaching tools.

The new building also includes a multi-purpose room that was almost cut from the design due to budgeting issues. 鈥淭hrough our value engineering and cost saving ideas, we came up with a solution so that the kids could have that functional space,鈥� Parry said.
