There are few renovation projects that require more sensitivity than that of a neonatal intensive care unit. JE Dunn therefore treated the expansion of the Holtzman Twin NICU at the Southwest Washington Medical Center with the utmost care.

The project added 1,800 square feet to the NICU and remodeled 1,400 square feet of the existing unit. During construction, JE Dunn ensured that the old facility remained operational and that work did not impact any patients, visitors or staff.

One of the project鈥檚 major challenges was to absolutely guarantee that power would remain on at all times. There were two critical switchovers on the electric panels that shutdown power to the NICU and emergency room. JE Dunn coordinated each event three weeks in advance, ensured the hospital had extra staff on duty, and created a power system for the NICU by pulling power from other areas as well.

Through the project team鈥檚 quality collaboration, the NICU was completed on time and within the budget.
