Instead of squeezing two-way traffic along East Burnside and Northeast Couch, these busy Portland streets now operate as a one-way couplet system with eastbound traffic on Burnside and westbound traffic on Couch.

The East Burnside-Couch Couplet Project reconstructed and realigned Burnside and Couch from the Burnside Bridgehead to Northeast 14th Avenue. The new roadway is complete with bike lanes, on-street parking, new sidewalks and planters, improved signalization, and a new plaza at Northeast Sandy and Northeast 14th.

Overall, the project included 22 intersection reconstructions, replacement and rehabilitation of the existing storm sewer system, and 100,350 square feet of new concrete walks, driveways and islands.

During construction, the team came up with routing plans to ensure the safety of聽 cars, bikes and pedestrians.

鈥淲e set up for what we thought might be a lot of confusion, but it was anticlimactic,鈥� said Jim Lauteren, vice-president of Nutter Corp, the project general manager. 鈥淓verything went smoothly.鈥�
