The Wanapum Dam Future Unit Infill Project was expected to take three years due to limited in-water work windows, but Barnard Construction Company managed to complete the work two years ahead of schedule.
Location: Beverly, Washington
Cost: $29.73 million
Start Date: May 2009
Completion Date: July 2010
Owner/Developer: Grant County Public Utility District No. 2
General Contractor: Barnard Construction Co. Inc.
鈥淲e faced a lot of doubts from a lot of people,鈥 Clif Stump, Barnard鈥檚 project manager, said. 鈥淏ut we were able to get all of the work done during the first fish window.鈥
Through aggressive scheduling and resource management, the team also completed the project under budget.
The project required the work team to stabilize the dam. With very limited access and work space, dive teams worked both in the dam and in the river in depths of up to 120 feet in order to first assist with concrete removal and then install 585 pre-cast, concrete stop logs.
Following stop log installation and grouting, the team found minimal leakage, an impressive achievement considering the depth of water at the dam.
