Kitzhaber signs Cool Schools legislation

As many as 43 schools will receive energy-efficiency upgrades this summer, funded by a program officially kicked off today when Gov. John Kitzhaber signed into law his 鈥淐ool Schools鈥� legislation.
鈥淐ool Schools is a triple-win for Oregon,鈥� said Kitzhaber in a statement about the legislation today. 鈥淭he program will bring family-wage jobs, cost savings, and better learning environments to schools in communities across the state.鈥�
passed both houses of the Oregon Legislature unanimously this week. It establishes a clean-energy deployment fund, which will provide loans for upgrades that will increase energy efficiency, use green technologies or improve airflow. The program’s money comes from existing funding sources.
According to Kitzhaber’s spokesperson Christine Miles, 43 schools have already applied for funds to make upgrades this summer. The application process will remain open until July 15.
