Parents and school seismic safety advocates Edward Wolf and Amanda Gersh have started an initiative and a petition to promote seismic upgrades to Oregon’s K-12 schools. The initiative is called 鈥�,鈥� and it is aimed at raising the profile of the seismic safety issue.

鈥淚t needed to be addressed at a state-wide level,鈥� Wolf said.

Currently, the initiative’s main project is a petition asking Gov. John Kitzhaber to place funding for the State Seismic Rehabilitation Grant Program as a higher priority, Wolf said. As of 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, the had received 70 signatures.

Wolf said that the initiative is sharing information with organizations, including Oregon’s chapter of the American Institute of Architects, which has also been involved in seismic rehabilitation advocacy and hosted a symposium on the topic earlier this year. While seismic safety advocates haven’t sought an official endorsement from the AIA, Wolf said that the petition had been shared with the group.

Wolf said he hopes the initiative might also help with school districts’ efforts to pass bonds that will fund seismic upgrades.
