The Portland Development Commission announced today that it signed a memorandum of understanding with the city of Portland and聽 a private company for the development of an in-conduit hydropower system in Portland.

Lucid Energy’s in-conduit hydropower systems use the flow of water through existing pipes to move turbines and generate power.

The MOU with Portland signals a 鈥渞eally big project鈥� for Lucid Energy, which already has a similar agreement with Riverside, Calif., said director of business development Josh Kanagy. The company is in the process of negotiating similar agreements with other municipalities, though Portland is the biggest city it has contracted with so far, Kanagy said.

Kanagy said the MOU is coincidental in its connection with the company鈥檚 recent move to Portland from Goshen, Ind., this August. Lucid Energy moved to Portland to be close to its technology development partner , which is based in Vancouver, Wash., and to be near other clean tech companies, Kanagy said.

鈥淧ortland has a really great ecosystem for clean tech companies and we wanted to participate in that ecosystem,鈥� Kanagy said.

According to PDC, the city plans to work with Lucid to test and install the company鈥檚 in-conduit hydropower system in the city for future eco-districts, car charging stations or water bureau facilities.
