Most companies have their hands full simply meeting the basic terms of a construction contact. For Faison Construction, a contract is just a starting point to bigger opportunities.

The company was hired by general contractor Hamilton Construction to handle moment slabs and a barrier for the Oregon Department of Transportation鈥檚 Interstate 5 鈥� Victory Boulevard to Lombard Street project.

Seeing that Faison easily handled hurdles associated with its portion of the project, Hamilton offered the smaller company more work. Eager to learn a new skill and armed with some basic how-to information from Hamilton, Faison Construction tackled its first-ever cast-in-place tall barrier.

Based on the company鈥檚 success with the barrier, Hamilton then asked Faison Construction to help pour small pieces of the bridge deck, micro silica overlays and bridge end panels.

鈥淣ot only did our scope keep growing,鈥� Faison Construction wrote in its DWESB TopProjects nomination form, 鈥渂ut our contract amount more than doubled.鈥�

While the company admits it was nice to walk away from the project with more money than originally anticipated, the real benefit was a longer-term one.

Since finishing its share of work on ODOT鈥檚 Victory to Lombard project, Faison Construction has worked on five other projects for the transportation department. The company also won a contract to work with Hamilton Construction placing more than 1,700 yards of bridge deck and micro silica overlays for a Portland Streetcar light-rail project.

鈥溾��.the real value was the experience we gained as well as the historical data needed so we could bid more competitively on future projects,鈥� the company wrote in its nomination.
