Digging trenches for sewer, electrical and phone lines can be a messy business.

However, when workers arrived for the next phase of the Port of Portland’s new office building and parking, they found everything as neat as a pin.

“Our valued and experienced employees made sure that we left our job area graded and ready for the next phase of construction,” said Juli Parrish, who owns Parrish Excavating with her husband, Mark.

The project started in 2005 and was finished last year. Parrish Excavating crews had to slip in and out between June and November of 2008.

“As with so many projects, meeting the construction schedule and its constant changes was a major challenge for the team,” she said. “This was more of a challenge than usual due to trade stacking that resulted from overlapping construction sequences.”

This caused delays and made space for construction materials – and even space for doing the work itself – limited.

“Using a strong core of our experienced employees, [we] helped coordinate efforts with other trades to ensure this project operated not only efficiently, but most importantly, safely,” Parrish said.

The crew from Parrish Excavating worked with everyone to coordinate the movement of workers and materials to ensure everything ran smoothly, she added.

“The implementation and mobilization of traffic control around PEI’s area of the jobsite and equipment went a long way toward ensuring the safety of all involved,” Parrish said. “Our experience in many varied site situations helped us excel on this project.

“[We are] proud to know that our flexibility, leadership and construction experience ensured the completion of the project for the desired opening date.”
