April showers usually bring May flowers. But in 2010, they brought a downpour of headaches to construction of Rock Creek Middle School.

Luckily for the project team, General Sheet Metal Works was involved in the work on the school.

For starters, the project, which kicked off in the spring, ran into some rough weather. That required some creative solutions from General Sheet Metal and other companies working on the project.

General Sheet Metal also ran into a head-scratcher with regard to the exposed metal decking for the building. The decking type didn鈥檛 allow for a weatherproof condition. Working with Emerick Construction, the project general contractor, and project architect Boora Architects, General Sheet Metal came up with the idea of adding metal panel soffits to the decking. That detail allowed for a waterproof result.

General Sheet Metal鈥檚 ability to come up with unique solutions again surfaced when the team was faced with different color schemes for the panel profiles and prefinished steel materials. By coming up with a color-coded set of elevations in shop drawings, the panel and steel materials portions of the project were finished without a single mistake.

General Sheet Metal鈥檚 willingness to overcome those hurdles likely would have been enough to earn the company accolades from other project team members. But the company, which handled nearly $695,000 worth of work on the $20 million project, went one step further.
