Portland City Council today approved a land-use issue that will allow Portland Adventist Academy to earn money for school upgrades by leasing land to a private developer.

City Council unanimously approved zoning and comprehensive map changes that will allow the school to rent out a six-acre parcel at the north end of the school’s 20-acre property in Southeast Portland. The Academy is planning to rent this land to a private developer, though there are currently no agreements in place with any specific groups.

The land might become a satellite campus for a higher education school, or it could be multi-use, residential or office development, according to Portland Adventist Academy Vice Principal Ty Johnson. A zoning change was necessary to allow the various kinds of commercial development the school is hoping to attract.

Today’s approval by city council was a 鈥渂ig deal,鈥� Johnson said.

鈥淲e’re very happy and excited about moving forward with this project,鈥� he said.

Portland Adventist Academy is leasing part of its land to Marquis Properties, which plans to build a 72-bed skilled nursing facility there. The school plans to use the long-term leases with Marquis and the future developer of the six northernmost acres of its property to finance massive upgrades and replacements of many of the school’s buildings. The school isn’t planning to grow its student body or change its programs, according to master plan documents.
