The Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. 鈥� located next door to the White House 鈥� today became the oldest building in the world to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating, according to the U.S. Green Building Council.

Construction began in 1836 on the east side and central wing, designed by Robert Mills, making the Treasury Building the third-oldest in the federal real estate portfolio after the White House and U.S. Capitol.

The Treasury Building, a National Historic Landmark, is receiving a LEED gold rating based on a number of green construction and operation improvements, including the installation of low-flow faucets, waterless urinals, lighting sensors and high-efficiency water heaters.
