PBOT to remove century-old West Burnside trolley tracks during maintenance project

Crews from the Portland Bureau of Transportation will begin work later this month to remove old trolley tracks and repair parts of West Burnside Street between Northwest Uptown Terrace and Northwest MacLeay Boulevard.

The old trolley tracks were probably laid in the early 1900s, according to PBOT spokeswoman Cheryl Kuck. As part of PBOT’s street maintenance and rehabilitation project, crews will also repair the layer of the road beneath the asphalt surface. The base layer roadwork is expected to improve the street’s capability of withstanding heavy vehicle loads in various weather conditions.

Project costs are approximately $50,000, according to Kuck. The right, westbound travel lane will be closed for five days beginning on Jan. 23, although the work schedule is weather dependent and could change.
