A lot has changed since Wisconsin native Paul C. Wood opened his blacksmith shop at 8065 S.E. 17th Ave. in 1933; but at least one sign of the times remains.

鈥淚t was a stable and it still has the O-rings on the sidewalk,鈥� said Sandra McLeod, a principal broker for Commonwealth Real Estate Cos., of the metal rings that riders once used to tie up their horses.

McLeod is listing the 1,872-square-foot space in Portland鈥檚 Sellwood neighborhood for $285,000. The property sits on a 5,000-square-foot lot and features approximately 900 square feet of office space, 1,000 square feet of retail space, two 500-square-foot garage/outbuildings and on-site parking.

According to the Oregon Historical Society, Wood operated his blacksmith shop for 25 years. In 1952, the name expanded to 鈥淧.C. Wood & Son Blacksmiths,鈥� before a new business, Scaddling Ornamental Iron Works, took over the space in 1959. By 1965, a company called Hydronix Inc. Pumps had moved in, as well as a coin-operated car wash business called Swift-T-Wash.

In the years to follow, the building was home to a number of various tenants and businesses, including an antique store, a ministry and a heating and air conditioning business. With its open storefront space, McLeod said the building is ideal for contractors looking for a showroom in addition to office space.

The building also has a large, wooden, roll-up door, which McLeod said could be replaced with a glass, roll-up door. Also, a patio space could be created behind the building, she added.

McLeod sees new potential for the 79-year-old structure.

鈥淵ou could do any number of things,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t could be a cool building.鈥�
