, a nonprofit that helps low-income families and adults in Southeast Portland gain housing, is working with to renovate Greenview Terrace, a 31-unit apartment building at Southeast 148^th Avenue and Stark Street. Once finished, the building will provide affordable housing for veterans and low-income families.

Brian Carleton of Carleton Hart Architecture said most of the work will be done on the building’s exterior; the roof, the doors, the windows and the siding need to be replaced. Work will also be done on the interior’s floors and kitchens.

CDC will work with various social service providers in the area to help place homeless families in the building. The organization will also work with Veterans Affairs to provide rent assistance for veterans.

鈥淥regon ranks in the top five states in both number of vets per capita and proportion of homeless vets. This project permits veterans to return home to outer Southeast Portland,鈥� said Nick Sauvie, CDC’s executive director.

Sauvie said the project will cost $4.4 million, with $1.7 million going toward the acquisition of the building, $1.6 going toward construction and $800,000 for development costs. The Portland Housing Bureau will pay $2.8 million of the cost because the CDC was one of three nonprofit developers chosen by the bureau in a competitive process last fall. Sauvie also expects to gain state funding for the project by the time it enters its design phase.

Carleton said he expects bidding for the project to begin this summer and construction to start near the end of the year.
