Career highlight: Long received the 2008 Marketing Partner of the Year Award, a national honor presented by The Hildebrandt Institute.

David Bartz

Law school: University of Oregon School of Law

Career highlight: Oregon Women Lawyers named Bartz the recipient of the 2007 Mercedes Diez Award for his work promoting women and minorities in the legal profession.

Mark Long and David Bartz are a team, a successful management yin and yang for their firm, Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt.

From 2001, the pair led the firm through a decade of growth and transition, improving the quality and range of services to their clientele and helping to increase the number of practicing attorneys in the firm to more than 165 in Oregon and Washington.

In addition to a practice focused on mergers and acquisitions, Long deals with the firm鈥檚 external concerns. After graduating from American University Washington College of Law, he worked in government, then the private sector in the District of Columbia area before returning to Oregon in 1982.

Long believes in giving back to the community he serves.聽 鈥淚 have an obligation to repay the people of Oregon for being able to practice law,鈥 he said.

He serves on the Freshwater Trust Board and the Oregon Business Association Board, and works with Loaves & Fishes as well as Metro Family Services.聽 Outside of his law practice, Long is an avid traveler, skier and mountain bike cyclist, living near the trailhead in Forest Park.

He admits there鈥檚 a common thread in how he practices law and how he rides.聽 鈥淢ountain biking can be dangerous.聽 My clients pay me to be prudent.聽 I鈥檓 like that when I ride too.鈥

Bartz handles Schwabe鈥檚 internal matters and is a litigator in the firm鈥檚 Environmental, Energy and Natural Resources practice group.聽He cites his experience as a Life Scout and the environmental and cultural respect that organization fosters as factors that jump-started his interest in a legal career.

He focused on environmental law at the University of Oregon, and has since worked primarily with agencies and companies, melding science and law into what is good for his clients and the region.

鈥淚 like to help clients come to the mindset of, 鈥業t鈥檚 easy to get my way now that I鈥檝e got multiple ways to solve the problem,鈥欌 he said.

He also mentors minority members of the firm and has a passion for coaching what he sees as the next generation of young attorneys, especially women and minorities. Outside of the office, Bartz enjoys the challenge of whitewater rafting and riding his motorcycle on quiet Oregon country roads.
