Law school: Lewis & Clark Northwestern School of Law

Career highlight: Shropshire is a member of the Owen M. Panner American Inn of Court.

Noteworthy: In addition to working with Habitat for Humanity, Shropshire is president of JOIN, which helps homeless people transition to life off the streets.

Steve Shropshire grew up in Colorado, where outdoor activities like hiking and rafting are plentiful. He found a way to combine those interests with his professional life as an environmental and natural resources lawyer.

鈥淏eing able to have a job with nice field trips is a good deal,鈥� he noted.

Shropshire earned his certificate in environmental and natural resources law from Lewis & Clark Law School in 1994. He now serves as general counsel for clients in the nursery, agribusiness and nonprofit fields, providing advice on matters ranging from transactions to litigation issues to regulatory compliance.

鈥淲hat I like most about my work is when a client calls me and thanks me for helping them solve issues that they are facing. It鈥檚 incredibly rewarding to have the opportunity to make a difference in people鈥檚 lives,鈥� he said.

A member of the Owen M. Panner American Inn of Court, Shropshire was recognized this year as Best Lawyers in America鈥檚 Portland Water Law and Natural Resources Lawyer of the Year. Chambers USA recognized him last year as a 鈥淟eading Individual in Environmental Law.鈥� Shropshire is co-chairman of the Multnomah Bar Association鈥檚 Managing Partner鈥檚 Roundtable and a member of its CLE Committee.

A former member of Lewis & Clark Law School鈥檚 Alumni Board of Directors, Shropshire continues to mentor through the law school鈥檚 Student Mentor Program and its Clinical Internship Program. He said he is committed to providing a realistic portrayal of the legal profession as students prepare to enter the workplace.

鈥淚 think the practice of law is very different from the legal education process,鈥� he said. 鈥淭his is a profession that is based very much on experience and wisdom, and for new lawyers it鈥檚 great to have mentors to help provide the wisdom they鈥檝e gained and act as a sounding board when you need to bounce ideas off of someone.鈥�
