In between running a thriving private practice that specializes in Indian law and being named a finalist in the Daily Journal of Commerce’s Leadership in Law Awards, Lea Ann Easton spent a good chunk of her time this month on the basketball court.

A member of the Portland Basketball Officials Association, Easton refereed several games earlier this month during the Oregon School Activities Association鈥檚 state high school basketball tournament.

Easton, who played basketball in high school and college while growing up in North Dakota, joined the officials association in the late 1980s after graduating from Lewis & Clark鈥檚 Northwestern School of Law in 1987.

鈥淚 was looking for a way to get involved in the community, and it鈥檚 a great way to stay active, especially during the winter,鈥� she said.

As a partner with Dorsay & Easton, Easton represents tribal clients and entities on matters such as treaty fishing rights, the Indian Child Welfare Act, tribal law development, land use, employment law, sovereignty, water law and jurisdictional issues. She also serves as an associate tribal court judge for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.

Easton has mentored Native American law students and clerks throughout her career, and volunteers for Native American Law Students Association moot court competitions. She is involved in the Juvenile Rights Project, the Oregon Task Force on Family and Juvenile Law Code Revision, and the Oregon State Bar鈥檚 Committee on Indigent Defense Standards of Practice.
