The city of Hillsboro has purchased a plot of land where it plans to build a public works facility.

The city purchased the 15-acre plot, located on Northwest Evergreen Road, for $2.5 million from a family that used it as farm land.

Bob Reitmajer, the city’s facilities and fleet director, said the current public works facility was built in 1968 and operates on only two acres of land. He said as the city has grown, the need for a new facility has become pressing.

鈥淧eople (at the existing facility) are tripping over each other,鈥� Reitmajer said. 鈥淭he existing facility is very substandard, and there’s no space to put the whole program in there.鈥�

Although the land purchase is final, Reitmajer said the project won’t enter the design phase for three or four years. 聽He said the city made the purchase because the plot was relatively inexpensive and it met sizing requirements.

Once enough money is raised, the city estimates it will spend $11.5 million on construction of the facility. Reitmajer said funding sources are unsure at this point.
