When you鈥檙e good, you鈥檙e good. Just ask Perkins Coie, which recently found out it had been named among the country鈥檚 top ten most family friendly law firms. Again.
In the past five years, the law firm has been a four-time repeat performer on the list, which is compiled by Yale Law Women to promote the interests of women in law school and the legal profession.
When I began covering law 10 years ago as a reporter newly hired at Briefly Legal鈥檚 parent pub, the Daily Journal of Commerce, I wondered to myself how the busy lawyers I talked to managed to find time to sleep, let alone carve out some quality hours to spend with their families. As it turns out, I wasn鈥檛 the only one pondering the question.
Now, though, the conversation has turned outward. At the Multnomah Bar Association鈥檚 annual dinner last year, I heard stories about how firms are 鈥 and, sadly, in some cases aren鈥檛 鈥 making a push to implement policies and programs that promote family friendly environments. The lawyers talking about how they would like to see the industry as a whole do more than pay lip service to the 鈥渇amily friendly鈥 concept weren鈥檛 always women.
So how has trying to balance work and family affected you, your partner or spouse, your kids? Have you come up with any unique solutions? Has your firm? Or do you think the law profession, in general, is doing all it can to help keep the work-life struggle from spinning out of control? I鈥檇 like to hear what you have to say.
