The first new medical school built in Oregon in more than a century, the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific at Western University of Health Sciences is a modern, high-tech facility.

At 60,000 square feet, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold-rated structure uses a living wall bio-filter of vertically suspended plants through which the HVAC system’s return air is filtered to detoxify interior air and add oxygen to the building’s interior. Long distance learning/presentation lecture halls can accommodate 400 students each and other major lab spaces can accommodate digital media presentations, recordings and broadcasts.

The project team was challenged to coordinate a myriad of technological requirements, such as anatomy and research labs, extensive information technology, audio-visual and teleconferencing requirements and other features necessary for a 21st century medical school.

Designed to expand to 110,000 square feet during phase II, the new school has a bright future in the Lebanon community. The facility has already brought new jobs to the area and promises opportunities for medical students.
