Industrial brownfields across the state will get a little money for spring cleaning.

The Environmental Protection Agency has awarded state and local government across Oregon more than $2.1 million in brownfields grant funding to help clean contaminated properties and revitalize former industrial sites for future housing, community space or commercial development projects.

The $2.1 million in funding is just a small piece of the $69.3 million in grants the EPA announced today for the cleaning of contaminated brownfield land across the nation. The EPA awarded the funds to 245 grantees including tribes, small communities and 39 states.

Local recipients include:

• The Oregon Business Development Department will receive $700,000 in supplemental funding for its Revolving Loan Fund Grant, which will be used for issuing additional loans for brownfield cleanup.
• The city of Eugene will receive $680,200 to establish a coalition with the city of Springfield and Lane County and develop a brownfields inventory and environmental land assessments.
• The Northeast Oregon Economic Development District will receive $400,000 to inventory and assess brownfield sites in Baker, Union and Wallowa counties.
• The city of Troutdale will receive $200,000 for the environmental assessment, community outreach and cleanup of its Troutdale Riverfront Redevelopment property.
• The city of Vernonia will receive $200,000 to inventory and assess brownfield sites throughout the city.

According to the EPA, there are an estimated 450,000 abandoned and contaminated waste sites in America.
