Kuangyi Liu, one of three international interns Miller Nash is hosting this summer, has seen the law from many perspectives. She earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree from China University of Political Science and Law and, while earning her degree, clerked in a Chinese court and a prosecutor鈥檚 office in Beijing.

Liu then earned LL.M. certification in corporate law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she also worked as a teaching assistant at Wharton Business School. She transferred to New York University鈥檚 School of Law to earn her law degree. During her second summer there, she was selected to participate in an exchange program between New York University and Kyushu University in Japan.

Liu recently earned her law degree from NYU and now works as a research fellow in university鈥檚 U.S.-Asia Law Institute. Licensed to practice in New York, Liu says she became a lawyer because she has always believed that justice should take priority. After completing her corporate law studies in Pennsylvania, she studied criminal law in New York. Though they are vastly different practices, Liu says, they meshed in her studies of white-collar crime. She now is working on a research project related to corporate responsibility.

鈥淭he U.S. is already way ahead in this area and China needs to put more emphasis on it,鈥� Liu says. 鈥淯nder Chinese law, we still focus on how to structure organizations to make them more environmentally friendly and more profitable.鈥�

Liu joined Miller Nash last March and will complete her internship in early August. She says she has enjoyed attending its educational luncheon series, witnessing proceedings in local courts and generally observing Portland鈥檚 legal community in action.

Along with the summer internship at Miller Nash, Liu is a visiting scholar at Lewis & Clark Law School through December. She laughed when asked to compare her experiences in the Big Apple and the Rose City.

鈥淣ew York is huge and it鈥檚 very diverse so I never feel lonely. I can always find Chinese people there,鈥� she says. 鈥淚n Portland the people are nice, and it almost feels like a smaller town. I actually like the rain and all of the trees here.鈥�
