Sylvia Lorenz

Sylvia Lorenz has only been in Portland for a few weeks, but she already knows her visit here will end before she gets to do and see everything she鈥檇 like during her summer in the Rose City.

Lorenz, an attorney with GSK Stockmann + Kollegen in Berlin, is one of three foreign lawyers here for summer internships with Miller Nash. Lorenz began practicing intellectual property law in 2008. She has partnered with Miller Nash attorneys on cases in the European Union over the last couple of years and says the internship is a great opportunity to network and learn.

鈥淭he idea was to strengthen relationships and see if there are more cooperation opportunities, get to know the people better and learn a bit more about how the U.S. legal system works,鈥 she says.

Lorenz says many of the intellectual property issues she deals with in Germany are similar to U.S. trends. These include international business transactions made on the Internet and electronic data protection.

She adds that she also wants to gain basic administrative tips, from how U.S. law firms organize their practice sections and handle copyright documentation to how to foster business development and continued collaboration.

This is Lorenz鈥檚 first visit to the U.S., and she says she鈥檚 glad Portland is her introduction to America.

鈥淚 just love walking around and watching, and whenever I see something I like I just go in that direction,鈥 she says, noting she particularly enjoys the cafes and shops. 鈥淎 month is not going to be enough to see everything I want to.鈥
