Julia Markley tried her first law case when she was in the fifth grade. Goldilocks was on trial, and Markley – the designated prosecutor – wasn鈥檛 about to let her off easy.

鈥淚鈥檝e always loved the idea of representing someone in court and persuading the judge or jury on a particular position,鈥� Markley says.聽 鈥淚 think I have always respected the court system and loved being a part of that. Even my partners say I鈥檓 a born litigator.鈥�

A partner at Perkins Coie and the daughter of Green & Markley partner Charles Markley, Julia earned her law degree from the University of Washington in 1999. Within a decade, she had been named an 鈥淥regon Rising Star鈥� by Oregon Law & Politics, served as founding president of the Oregon Asian Pacific American Bar Association and earned Perkins Coie鈥檚 Pro Bono Leadership Award.

Markley recently received the Oregon Area Jewish Committee鈥檚 Judge Learned Hand Emerging Leader Award for her contributions to the legal profession, which include advising U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, as well as former Gov. Ted Kulongoski, on judicial appointments. She has filled leadership roles with Oregon Women Lawyers, the Oregon State Bar, the Oregon Law Commission and the Federal Bar Association of Oregon.

With a specialty in intellectual property, complex business and appellate litigation, Markley tries cases in both state and federal courts. She says her work gives her the opportunity to learn new things through her clients鈥� businesses, which range from communications, technology and manufacturing to construction, energy and mining.

鈥淚n one case I got to learn a ton about Google and its mobile apps and products, and that was something I hadn鈥檛 known much about,鈥� she says. 鈥淚 have a pen marker case, and I didn鈥檛 realize there was such a sophisticated array of markers that artists use. It鈥檚 a great way to learn about new businesses and emerging markets.鈥�

Markley notes that community involvement is a big part of her life. She is a mentor for Lewis & Clark Law School, a Classroom Law Project volunteer and a member of the YWCA of Portland鈥檚 Development Committee.

When she鈥檚 not working or volunteering, the former collegiate runner enjoys riding her bike and training for triathlons. She will participate in the Portland Triathlon on Sept. 23, her first since becoming a mom. A Central Catholic High School grad, Markley spent her Summer Olympics cheering on fellow alum Galen Rupp as he raced to a silver medal.
