According to a joint survey by Forbes Magazine and San Francisco-based startup Nextdoor.com, the Pearl District ranks No. 5 among “.”
Dabney Lawless, vice president of communications for Nextdoor.com, said turning demographics from more than 250 cities into data was easier said than done.
“Obviously people associate skinny jeans with being a hipster, but there’s really no way to quantify that,” she said.
So the group began searching for hipster habitats – mainly coffee shops. With 28 coffee shops for every 100,000 residents, the Pearl ranks No. 2 (behind Seattle) in the country.
Lawless said food trucks and farmers’ markets were added to the criteria. Walkability also was taken into account; the Pearl ranked 95 out of 100.
“We could easily have picked three to four different neighborhoods (in Portland),” Lawless said. “It ultimately came down to the Pearl, Mississippi Avenue and the Alberta Arts District.”
When it came down to it, Lawless said choosing the Pearl was simply a judgment call. On the list, it trailed only Los Angeles’ Silver Lake, San Francisco’s Mission District, Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood and Chicago’s Wicker Park.
