Architects and designers from across the globe are attending the biennial conference of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments Oct. 4 to 7 in Portland at The Nines Hotel.

The conference is sponsored by the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts and Urban Design Lab and the College of Environmental Design at the University of California at Berkeley.

Association members will examine myths associated with architecture, public policy, green construction, design theory and other issues related to construction and architecture. They will also look at how ethnicity, urban fantasies, national identity and other perceptions affect architecture.

Attendees are expected from Brazil, Indonesia, Iran, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Korea, Cyprus, Egypt, Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Turkey, Singapore, France, Spain, Australia, Portugal, Finland, Denmark, Qatar, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, Ireland and the United States. Last year’s event was held in Beirut.

The keynote speakers are John Archer of the University of Minnesota, Mia Fuller of the University of California at Berkeley, Nasser Rabbat of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Chris Wilson of the University of New Mexico.

University of Oregon professors Howard Davis, Kingston Heath, Deni Ruggeri, Alison Snyder, Yizhao Yang and Jenny Young sit on the local advisory committee.
