Several Portland architecture firms were recently recognized for significant work in the Pacific Northwest region.

The American Institute of Architects Northwest and Pacific Region awarded 16 projects overall for design excellence at its annual conference, Oct. 12, in Tucson, Ariz. Winning projects were completed in the past five years and ranged in scope from custom homes to research facilities. The organization’s reach spans Alaska, Micronesia, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Idaho, Japan, Montana, Washington and Oregon.

One of the top Honor Awards went to ZGF Architects in Portland for its design of the University of Oregon’s John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes. The 40,000-square-foot academic building features a modern design with a clear, glass exterior and interior atrium with numerous public art displays.

Holst Architecture also received a merit award for its design of the Bud Clark Commons in Portland, and Skylab Architecture received a citation for its work on the Nike Olympic Trials Pavilion in Eugene.
