All projects are different, and sometimes the unexpected can lead to delays. But Parrish Excavating Inc. wasn鈥檛 about to let a couple of unplanned hurdles hamper the construction schedule for the three-story, mixed use Rockwood Building in Gresham.

Parrish鈥檚 project manager Patrick Doherty said the work was done on a very small footprint. The rectangular building footprint of 23,000 square feet on a 93,000-square-foot site presented many challenges, and his company ended up providing help with layout and surveying so work on the project could continue uninterrupted.

鈥淣ormally, you go in and everything is staked and laid out. But on this project there were many occasions where we had to actually do that ourselves,鈥� he said. 鈥淲e had to help to meet scheduling demands and keep the flow of construction instead of stopping work and waiting. We continued down the path to help it go smoothly.鈥�

As a subcontractor for general contractor Howard S. Wright Construction, Doherty said, Parrish didn鈥檛 charge extra for the layout work or for moving a topsoil stockpile several times to give the general contractor and other trades enough room to work on the small site.

Parrish worked with the city of Gresham to design a new route for pedestrians to safely cross the construction area.聽 The company also helped other subcontractors with digging and backfilling, and was hired by both the electrical and plumbing subcontractors for additional work after the project began.

鈥淭he general contractor got pretty busy with the interior of the building, so we provided those additional services,鈥� Doherty said.

Parrish didn鈥檛 charge for all of the extra tasks it handled 鈥� services that weren鈥檛 part of the company鈥檚 overall bid. But Doherty said the company felt that lending a hand when necessary was the right thing to do.

鈥淚t was a very challenging site and a very challenging project,鈥� Doherty said, 鈥渂ut it was for the greater good of trying to get this east side back up.鈥�
