When Oregon Health & Science University decided to update its Student Center, it devised a master plan with a series of upgrades and hired INLINE Commercial Construction Inc. to carry them out.

Among the improvements was a three-month project that transformed a former squash court to support a bookstore. The project involved the structural infill of the squash court with a new wood joist floor system to support the relocation of the existing bookstore.

In order to make way for the new location, the project required saw cutting and the removal of an eight-inch-thick, poured-in-place concrete wall. Completed on Sept.1, 2011, the new bookstore enclosure is composed of bamboo casework and sliding glass doors feature custom graphics. 3Form dimming light boxes highlight the architectural features of the enclosure and the adjoining checkout/help desk. New merchandising casework and a polished concrete floor finish off the new space.

Todd Duwe, INLINE鈥檚 vice president and senior project manager, said some work was done during off-hours when the center was closed, though most of it took place while students and faculty continued to use the building. The company sought to minimize disruptions while controlling dust, noise and vibrations and ensuring the security of students and faculty during construction.

鈥淧eople sometimes forget that OHSU is a learning institution along with being a wonderful hospital, and this provides a neat place for the students and faculty to go,鈥 Duwe said, adding the Student Center houses a movie room, caf茅, gym and several other amenities.

The previous bookstore was located upstairs from the new location and was converted into a student lounge. Administrative offices, commons spaces and storage spaces also received improvements. In addition, INLINE has done a seismic upgrade on the building, re-floored and repainted the gym, and upgraded the center鈥檚 hot water system.
