SRG Partnership has designed a new Hillsboro stadium, which will be more than a home for the Hops, the city’s minor league baseball team.

鈥淭he idea here is that it will be a multipurpose sports complex,鈥� said Jeff Yrazabal, a senior associate with SRG. 鈥淭he rest of the year the city can be using this for a variety of things.鈥�

The 4,000-seat stadium, which will cost between $13 million and $15 million to construct, was designed to accommodate numerous types of events 鈥� from movie screenings to food cart gatherings and other sporting events.

The facility will be built near Hillsboro Stadium, which is used for football. Eventually, a plaza will be created between the two stadiums, so that space is available for other events.

The new stadium’s design was intended to complement Hillsboro Stadium; some of the same building materials, such as concrete masonry unit walls, will be used. Also, the stadium will have white steel tubes leading to its roof; such materials help create the iconic look of Hillsboro Stadium, Yrazabal said.

SRG has worked on other stadium projects, including a new one for the University of Washington baseball team. The biggest challenge in designing baseball parks is focusing on the 鈥減ark鈥� aspect, Yrazabal said.

鈥淚n baseball, more so than any other sport, you’re on your feet during the event and people are up and moving around the entire experience,鈥� he said. 鈥淭he strength of any baseball stadium at any level (is) you really want a place where families and all spectators have a variety of activities that are engaging during events.鈥�

To meet this need, SRG designed the stadium to have a 鈥�360 walk鈥� feature, so fans can walk around the entire stadium during events and enjoy other amenities, such as the grass area beyond the outfield. A new concession area will be built on the back of Hillsboro Stadium and be open during baseball games.

Also, SRG must meet minor league design standards that pertain to training and locker rooms, seating and parking.

The Hops are expecting to play ball by this summer, so there is pressure to finish the project, which Hoffman Construction started recently, in a timely manner, Yrazabal said.

鈥淚t’s very compressed schedule for design and construction,鈥� he said. 鈥淭hankfully, Hoffman and SRG have a good working relationship.鈥�
