Portland-based ZGF Architects beat out 14 other firms for a contract to design a new 90,000-square-foot building to serve as the headquarters for the Multnomah County Health Department.

The building will be constructed on Northwest Sixth Avenue, adjacent to Bud Clark Commons in Portland’s Old Town-China area. When completed, the building will serve as home base for approximately 250 county health employees, and will contain office, clinical and pharmacy space.

Multnomah County and Home Forward are developing the project.

A call for proposals for the design portion of the project was issued this past October. A selection committee made up of representatives from the county and Home Forward along with a client of the county health department selected and interviewed the four finalists. From that pool, ZGF was awarded a $2.3 million contract that includes architectural, health care specialty, interior and landscape design. The contract also covers engineering, electrical and plumbing design, and documentation necessary to submit the completed building for a LEED gold designation.

As part of its contract, ZGF will be required to design a building with a level of energy efficiency that will meet the standards of the 2030 Architecture Challenge while also falling in line with a 2009 Climate Action Plan that was adopted by the county and the city of Portland.

Construction of the project is slated to begin in summer 2014. A request for proposals will be issued for a general contractor for the project. The county did not identify a specific date when that RFP would be issued, other than to say it will be issued 鈥渟hortly.鈥�
